Boyzone - Stephen Patrick David Gately

Stephen Patrick David Gately (17 March 1976 – 10 October 2009) was an Irish pop singer-songwriter, actor, dancer,musician and author, who, with Ronan Keating, was one of two lead singers of the pop group Boyzone. All of Boyzone's studio albums hit number one in the United Kingdom, their third and last being their most successful internationally. With Boyzone Gately had a record-breaking sixteen consecutive singles enter the top five of the UK Singles Chart. He performed for millions of fans globally. He released a successful solo album in 2000, after the group's initial breakup, which charted in the UK top ten and yielded three UK hit singles, including the top three hit "New Beginning". Gately went on to appear variously in successful stage productions and on television programmes as well as contributing songs to various projects. In 2008, he rejoined his colleagues as Boyzone reformed for a series of concerts and recordings.

Gately wed Andrew Cowles, first in a commitment ceremony in Las Vegas in 2003 and more formally in a civil partnership ceremony in London in 2006. Gately made his sexuality known in 1999 and came out in a blaze of publicity. He was the first ever boyband member to do so. Upon Boyzone's reformation, Gately featured as part of the first gay couple in a boyband's music video in what was to be his last music video with the band, for the song "Better". He was discovered dead at an apartment he owned with Cowles in Majorca, Spain on 10 October 2009. Brian Boyd in The Irish Times said "Stephen Gately’s death represents the first time that the boyband genre has had to deal with such a tragic situation". Tim Teeman of The Times (UK) heralded Gately as a hero of gay rights for his response to being "smoked out of the closet".

Tragic Boyzone star Gately set for bestseller list Read

Stephen Gately's posthumous children's novel is likely to go straight into the bestseller list when it is published this week. Boyzone singer Gately was finishing his 300-page fantasy novel when he died suddenly in Spain aged 33. More than 15,000 copies of 'The Tree of Seasons' have been pre-ordered -- 10,000 in Ireland and 5,000 in Britain -- according to its publishers. That level of sales in Ireland would put the book straight into the top three next week. "Stephen was so loved in Ireland that, predictably, interest in his book has been huge," a spokesman in Ireland for publishers Hodder & Stoughton said yesterday. "We think it may be one of the biggest children's titles this year." Breda Perdue, the managing director of Hodder in Ireland, was one of the first people to read the book. She said: "It was clear to me immediately that Stephen was a really talented writer. "The story is a really involving one, creating a detailed imaginary world along the lines of Narnia. I realised straight away that it deserved to be published in Britain as well as here, so I urged our parent company in the UK to take it on." The last few pages of the book were completed by Stephen's partner Andrew Cowles and by the Irish writer June Considine, who is a sister of well-known author Dermot Bolger.

The book tells the story of three British children who live near a forest where they discover a tree that is a doorway into a magical and dangerous world. There are four kingdoms in that world, each forever stuck in spring, summer, autumn and winter. The book will be published in hardback in Britain on Thursday priced at €18.50. Like Harry Potter, it is expected to appeal to all ages. Elton John pays tribute to Gately in the foreword.

Boyzone announce 2011 Dublin gig

They had a tough year in 2009, They lost a brother, a friend and a band member. Boyzone however are back on tour for a tour of the UK and Ireland in 2011.

Boyzone Stars Play Celebrity Charity Soccer

The game – which featured United players such as Dwight Yorke and Jaap Stam, as well as stars such as Tinchy Stryder, Ricky Whittle and Olly Murs – was part of the United Relief Live: The Big Red Day Out event in aid of Sport Relief and the Manchester United Foundation.

With performances by Tinchy Stryder, The Saturdays and Tony Christie, the game attracted over 30,000 people.

“Charity is the most important part of the day, and it’s a tribute to the foundation which put this show on the road,” said United manager Alex Ferguson. “Charities exist because of the people who support them, and that’s why I always applaud people who take part.”

According to the Manchester United Foundation’s website, the charity “aims to use the passion for Manchester United to educate, motivate and inspire young people to build a better life for themselves and improve the communities they live in. The Foundation delivers football coaching, skills training, personal development and life changing experiences, providing young people with opportunities to change their lives for the better. Through football, we encourage young people to develop as players and more importantly as people.”

Boyzone - Shane Lynch & Ronan Keating

Irish singer Shane Lynch didn't hesitate when he was asked to strip for the new Boyzone video - because he saw the saucy scenes as a chance to mess with the band's clean-cut image. In the promo for Love Is a Hurricane, Lynch shed his clothes, and he admits it was a deliberate ploy to move Boyzone in a new direction. He tells Britain's Live From Studio Five, "I actually suggested it. Me and the boys have always done tame videos and I said to the lads one day, 'We need to get naked!' "The album we've released is a different step forward for us boys, it is an obvious transformation musically. The video was a visual transformation. I just said, 'Let's push the boat out and do things differently.'" In other Boyzone related news star Ronan Keating has missed out on a race to Venice, Italy from London in a classic Jaguar sportscar - because the owner wouldn't let him get behind the wheel. The Irish singer helped launch a car versus train race across Europe on Thursday morning (29Apr10) - between a 1956 Grand Prix Jaguar D-type and the Orient Express. Keating had to settle for a seat aboard the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express train, which is favored to win the race to Italy, after he was told driving the car would not be an option. Before the train left Victoria Station, the singer said, "I asked (to drive it) but they wouldn't let me." The car's owner, Jonathan Turner, will share the responsibility of getting the car to Venice ahead of the train with Octane magazine editor Robert Coucher, who organized the race. Both the train and the classic car are expected to arrive at their destination on Friday evening (30Apr10).

Keating eyes dark, edgy 'Hobbit' role

Ronan Keating has apparently auditioned for a role in The Hobbit as part of his quest to move into the movie industry. The Boyzone singer is still waiting to hear back from the producers behind the two-part Lord Of The Rings prequel. Keating said: "I don’t think I'll get the role of 'The Hobbit'. But I would like to take on roles which nobody would expect. I don't want to be reduced to love stories. I'd like to try dark, edgy roles. I need a challenge." The father-of-three told freundin.de that despite his acting aspirations, he is still committed to Boyzone. "I just love to work with the guys," he said. Director Peter Jackson recently confirmed that both Hobbit scripts have been delivered to MGM and the Guillermo del Toro project is currently in the budgeting stages. Boyzone, Lady Gaga Top U.K. Charts

Irish pop band Boyzone's "Brother" (Polydor/Universal) returned to the top of the U.K. album chart yesterday, as Lady Gaga's "Telephone" (Interscope/Universal), featuring Beyoncé, started a second week atop the singles survey.

The Boyzone album, dedicated to their late former colleague Stephen Gately, entered at No. 1 two weeks ago before dipping to No. 3, but was revitalized by the Mar. 21 screening of the group's tribute show to Gately on ITV. The hour-long special featured Boyzone performances with fellow Irish pop outfit Westlife and Mika, alongside tributes from former Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern, Robbie Williams and many others. The single "Gave It All Away," which debuted at No. 9 three weeks ago, bounced back 29-10.

Gaga's "The Fame" album fell 1-2 as Justin Bieber's "My World" (Def Jam/Universal) raced 33-3 in its 10th chart week. The album had previously peaked at No. 4 in its debut week in late January and now revives after the teen star's U.K. promo visit. Bieber's "Baby" single, featuring Ludacris, climbed back 4-3, where it entered two weeks ago. English singer-songwriter Laura Marling's sophomore album "I Speak Because I Can" (Virgin/EMI), much acclaimed in the British media, debuted at No. 4, two years after her debut set "Alas, I Cannot Swim" reached No. 45.

With "'Glee': The Music: Season One, Volume 2" (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment) down 2-5, Goldfrapp's "Head First" (Mute/EMI) arrived at No. 6 to become the duo's third consecutive U.K. top ten album. The last two, 2005's "Supernature" and "Seventh Tree" in 2008, both reached No. 2.

Elsewhere on the singles chart, Cheryl Cole's "Parachute" (Fascination/Polydor/Universal) climbed 6-5 and Inna's "Hot" (3 Beat/All Around The World/UMTV) 8-6. "Bedrock" (Universal) by Young Moneyfeaturing Lloyd improved 12-9, and there was a No. 13 entry for "Omg" (LaFace/Sony Music Entertainment) by Usher featuring will.i.am.

Both of Billboard's pan-European sales charts had new No. 1s, with Amy Macdonald's "A Curious Thing" (Mercury/Universal) rising 3-1 on European Albums and Belgian singer-songwriter Stromae's "Alors On Danse" (Mosaert/Vertigo/Universal) moving back 2-1 for a second aggregate week atop Hot 100 Singles.

Boyzone have returned to the top of the UK album charts.

Brother, the group's fifth number one album, first reached the top spot a fortnight ago but was beaten by Lady GaGa's The Fame Monster last week.
However, it has now reclaimed the crown after a 60% increase in sales week-on-week.
Speaking to Radio 1, band member Mikey Graham said: "It's absolutely amazing that we've had a number one album again with Brother... We really want to thank all our fans for the support they've given us not only in the last 17 years, but particularly in the last six months [since the death of Stephen Gately]. Thank you very, very much from me and all the boys."
There were two new entries in the top ten, with Laura Marling's I Speak Because I Cancharting at number four and Goldfrapp's Head First going straight in at number six. Justin Bieber re-entered the top ten, climbing 30 places to number three with My Worlds.
However, Gorillaz fell eight places to number 12 with Plastic Beach, while Amy Macdonald's A Curious Thing dropped to number 15. The first compilation of songs fromGlee also slipped five places, charting at number 11.

LET me introduce you to the new and improved Irish manband Boyzone. Yesterday I told you how the video to their hot new tune Love Is A Hurricane, out on May 17, was blowing the wind up my sails. Now see for yourself. A naked Shane Lynch, 33, said: “We wanted the vid to be striking and powerful. We filmed it at Battersea Power Station in London as it was a really raw and urban backdrop for us to work with.” I’m off for a lie down...

Boyzone singer left Coronation Street fans puzzled

Boyzone singer and Coronation Street actor Keith Duffy has left Coronation Street fans puzzled after the Boyzone singer claims he is not leaving the soap. A Sunday newspaper claimed the singer was leaving Coronation Street to concentrate on Boyzone and fans believed the claims were true after watching the tribute to Steven Gately where all Boyzone members including Ronan said they were committed to Boyzone. Ronan even said he would be glad when all the other stuff the lads and he were doing, all the commitments they had were no longer so Boyzone could be their main priority. Keith Duffy however has come forward on the Official Coronation Street site and said he is not leaving the soap. The actor and singer even claimed the story was made up and was excited at new storylines that were coming his way and told fans that he was committed to Coronation Street. The article claimed Keith said: "I need to concentrate on being with the boys. "We've got a lot coming up so I've decided they'll take priority. "I love the show so it's been a hard decision. But I know it's right."

Fans have been left puzzled, with Coronation Street fans wondering if one of their favourite characters will be staying in the soap while Boyzone fans are concerned that the lads from Boyzone will not be going all out to produce more albums and tours with the lads doing their separate things.

Keith Duffy trading 'Corrie' role for Boyzone

Original Boyzone member Keith Duffy has announced he is giving up his role in Coronation Street to concentrate on forthcoming projects with the boyband. The Irish actor, who plays barman Ciaran McCarthy in the long-running soap, has confirmed he will not be renewing his contract with Corrie when it ends in November. "I need to concentrate on being with the boys. We've got a lot coming up so I've decided they'll take priority," says the singer, who joined his bandmates for a Stephen Gately tribute concert at the weekend.

Boyzone - Brother (Universal)

LAST October, the members of Boyzone were rocked by the shock death of their bandmate Stephen Gately, at just 33. On their latest album, and first studio album since 1998, the ageing boyband pay tribute to their lost “brother” while delivering the sort of catchy and heartfelt pop mu sic they made their name on. But as one would suspect, there’s nothing groundbreaking here. 7.5m tune in for Boyzone's Gately tribute

Boyzone's special tribute to Stephen Gately secured a decent audience for ITV1 last night, the latest viewing figures show.
The hour-long concert, which the boyband staged in honour of the late singer, drew 7.54m (27.9%) between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.
Dancing On Ice pulled in 7.96m (29.8%) at 7.15pm, then the results show, in which Danniella Westbrook was voted off, claimed 7.21m (27.7%).
Over on BBC One, Lark Rise To Candleford took 5.77m (21%) at 8pm, then the audience dropped to 3.35m (12.6%) during the 9pm screening of Seven Ages of Britain.
Tropic of Cancer put in 2.39m (8.7%) for BBC Two during the 8pm hour, then Wonders of the Solar System was seen by 3m (11.3%) at 9pm.
and The Restoration Man interested 2.05m (7.44%) and 2.03m (7.7%) for Channel 4 at 8pm and 9pm respectively.
Into The Blue attracted 1.5m (5.5%) for Five between 8pm and 10pm.
Overall, ITV1 came top during primetime with an average share of 24.4% to BBC One's 19.3%. BBC Two was third with 10.6%, followed by Channel 4 with 6.1% (+1 :0.6%) and Five's 5.8%.

Boyzone toast Stephen's memory

Boyzone are toasting Stephen Gately's memory on St Patrick's Day - what would have been his 34th birthday. Ronan Keating, Shane Lynch, Mikey Graham and Keith Duffy are celebrating their fourth album Brother going straight to No 1 and will raise a pint of Guinness - but had admitted the day would be hard for them without Stephen. Ronan told The Daily Star: "It's bittersweet - Steo would have been so, so happy about the success of the album because he was truly excited about making it."

Boyzone Brother Review

The comeback trail for Boyzone was a bumpy one long before the death ofStephen Gately in October 2009, an event that delayed completion of this fourth studio album.

Back Again… No Matter What, released in 2008 to coincide with reunion activity – the group had been effectively disbanded since 2000 – was a poorly received rehashing of 1999’s best-of set, By Request; its three new songs offered little beyond the established, ballad-heavy formula. Tour tickets sold well, but unlike 1990s rivals-cum-peers Take That, Boyzone didn’t noticeably embrace a fresh audience upon their return.

While Take That have now courted the affections of three generations, the stolid, workmanlike approach to arrangement on Boyzone albums has always been too clinical to enjoy comparable appeal. And it was only after Take That’s split in 1996 that Boyzone hit their creative stride, with third album Where We Belong (1998) featuring a number of tracks written by the singers themselves.

Sadly, in the same year they took Westlife on tour with them, leading to a period of pop dominance that most will want to forget. Seven numbers ones in a row: who’d admit to buying them now? Anyway, pardon the digression: back to Brother matters, and album four from Boyzone plays out largely to expectations. It’s soft about its edges, its lyrical content exclusively syrupy – but that’s fine, as at this stage in their career, pronounced progression was never a likely option. The four play to recognised strengths, and their writing/producing team – with credits likeLeona Lewis, Celine Dion and Delta Goodrem – is an accomplished, if not particularly showy one.

It’s sad, though, that Gately eulogy-of-sorts Gave It All Away – written by Mika, and featuring the late singer’s easily identifiable vocals – is so very poor. Beginning with backwards strings, the song shuffles to an awkward, cod-reggae beat – imagine Ali Campbell on auto pilot, writing for the money. Such is the opener’s weakness that Love Is a Hurricane can’t fail to impress. Invigoratingly breezy, and featuring a strong Ronan Keating lead vocal, it’s evidence that Boyzone can raise the pace when it suits them, rare though such instances are. Let Your Wall Fall Down is another welcome diversion into such territories.

But with ballads dominating, Brother is a Boyzone album for Boyzone fans – younger ears accustomed to the faster RnB tempos of contemporary boybands like JLS may wonder what the fuss was ever about.

High Five: Boyzone's Brother Tops The Charts

Boyzone's first album since the death of bandmate Stephen Gately has gone straight to the top of the UK charts. Brother is the band's fifth number one album and features vocals recorded by Gately before his death in Majorca. Gately, 33, died from natural causes at his holiday villa in October last year. He had been working on the new Boyzone album shortly before his death. The band released one of the tracks off the album in January as a tribute single to Gately.

Gave It All Away begins with Gately singing the words: "I've learned to live before I die, I've learned to love and learned to try not to give it all away."

At the time of the track's release, Boyzone's Ronan Keatingtold Sky News Online: "The four of us have given our heart and soul to this to make the best possible record we can make for Stephen and his family.

"Thankfully Stephen had recorded the entire song so we were able to go away and work with what he had done.

"I hope the end result does him justice. I think it's beautiful."

Meanwhile, Boyzone have revealed they are almost ready to tour again.

The group, who performed for the first time without Gately last week, said that sales of their album have inspired them to get back on the road.

Boyzone stay on top of UK album chart

Boyzone have topped the UK album charts for the second week in a row.

Their record Brother debuted at number one four weeks ago. It dropped two places a fortnight ago but regained the top spot last week.

The top three was unchanged, with Lady GaGa's The Fame Monster and Justin Bieber's My Worlds holding onto second and third place respectively.

The only new entry in the top ten was Free & Bad Company's greatest hits collection, which went straight in at number ten. The Glee cast climbed four places to number seven with their first compilation of songs, while the second volume jumped a place to number four.

Meanwhile, Laura Marling's I Speak Because I Can dropped 14 places to number 18 and Goldfrapp slipped 18 spots to number 24 with Head First.

Craig David missed out on the top ten, with Signed, Sealed, Delivered reaching number 13. Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour live album charted at number 17.

The track written by Mika became the lead single from the new album, titled Gave It All Away. Boyzone loved this track and wished to release this song as their comeback single. The song received its first airplay on 17 January 2010.

Boyzone performed together for the last time in January 2000. What initially started on that (by now infamous) appearance on The Late Late Show, they had sold more than 10 million records in total.

New entries into the UK singles chart came from Usher at 13 with Omg featuring Will I Am, Timbaland at 29 with Carry Out featuring Justin Timberlake and David Guetta at 38 with Memories featuring Kid Cudi.

Lady Gaga's debut album The Fame currently sits at number two, with Boyzone claiming the number one album with their record Brother. The No. 2 slot is more closely contested, with Plan B's "She Said" and Lady Gaga's "Telephone" neck-and-neck.
